According to a USGS statement, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred on Thursday morning in the Kermadec Islands region, which is north of New Zealand.
At a depth of 10 kilometres, the earthquake occurred. Coastal areas within 300 kilometres of the epicentre may see dangerous tsunami waves, the agency warns in a separate statement. According to a tweet from Australia's Department of Meteorology, there is no tsunami threat to the country.
